Slag ...The All-Purpose Construction Aggregate

THE ADVANTAGES OF SLAG
Slag is versatile. In projects across the country, it has been clearly demonstrated that Slag has innate qualities that make it superior material in many, many construction applications. What makes it better? A few of the answers to that question are presented here.

What is Blast Furnace Slag?

What is Steel Furnace Slag?

Versatility
There is no need for two or more aggregates on a job when Slag is used. Blast furnace Slag is light weight, durable, attractive in color and many other positive qualities making it the ideal material for more than 44 applications, including special requirements, such as terrazzo and exposed aggregate panels; and some outside the construction field, such as glass and mineral wool manufacture and agriculture. Steel furnace Slag is heavier than blast furnace Slag and serves well as an aggregate for bituminous asphalt, fill and unpaved roads.

RETURN

Durability
Whether used in above or below grade installations, Slag has consistently and repeatedly proved highly resistant to weathering. It stands up under wetting and during freezing and thawing with an absolute minimum of deterioration. Excellent performance, through long years of service in a variety of structures is the best measure of Slag’s durability.

RETURN

Yield
Because of its light weight, blast furnace Slag provides more surface and greater volume per ton than natural aggregates, with no sacrifice in strength or durability. Regardless of the application, this means greater yield per ton.

RETURN

Bond
The non-interconnected cellular structure of Slag creates unusually fine bonding characteristics. Its sharp edges interlock and mesh together when compacted to prevent shifting or raveling. When combined with other materials, such as cement mortar or bitumen, blast furnace Slag mixtures offer unusually high bonding strengths. Steel furnace Slag provides exceptionally high stability offering non-rutting pavement performance.

RETURN

Environmentally Sustainable
A co-product of steel manufacturing, Slag is a renewable resource that offers exceptional performance and does not promote unsightly abandoned quarry holes.

RETURN

Safety
Highways built with Slag not only resist wear but provide superior protection against skidding. Slag offers the most skid-resistant pavement surfaces currently available. Far superior to most limestone aggregates, Slag offers truly exceptional high stability non-rutting and high friction surface mixtures.Slag aggregates meet Federal, state and local specifications and are acceptable under virtually all building codes.

RETURN

Fire Resistance
Born of fire, Slag is consequently remarkably fire-resistant in use. Subjected to temperatures as high as 3000° F in the blast furnace, Slag emerges free of volatile and combustible elements. Thus products made with Slag are more resistant to fires or extreme heat. Blast furnace Slag used in concrete and masonry products offer superior fire ratings to sand and gravel, second only to light weight expanded blast furnace Slag which offers a four hour fire-rated masonry product.

RETURN

Light Weight
The advantages of blast furnace Slag’s weight are significant. Slag is easier to handle, cheaper to transport. It reduces dead load and allows for important savings in supporting structures. Lighter weight also contributes an economic advantage in many fill operations, such as bridging swampy sites or as backfill against structures and walls.

RETURN

Economy
Construction using Slag provides both initial and long range economic advantages. The versatility of Blast furnace Slag's high yield, bond and light weight reduce construction costs. Its durability, safety and fire resistance minimize maintenance costs and insure a long, trouble free life for any type of construction. Steel furnace Slag pavements last longer than other natural aggregates while providing a stable rut-resistant high friction roadway. Longer lasting surfaces means fewer resurfacings yielding lower overall costs. Steel Slag roads say jet-black keeping their "like-new" appearance longer.
